Native American Research - Harvesting Black Ash
People have shaped most of terrestrial nature for at least 12 thousand years. Areas under indigenous management to day are recognized as some of the most bio diverse areas remaining on the planet. When harvesting black ash, the accepted practice is to carefully and selectively fell mature trees which will create a gap in the canopy,. giving ash saplings the light they need to both grow healthier and straighter. Black ash serves and maintains the wetland and riparian eco systems where it grows. Suzanne's doctoral research aims to bring indigenous voices to the table around issues of access to natural resources.
