The History of Ecology
In the early part of the 20th century, mainly in physics, physicists moving into biology was saying, wait a minute, how can you talk about ecology without too much energy? And so that effort to integrate fundamental variables from the physical world and then put them in the service of a biological phenomenon didn't seem to be working very well. I think what's happening in the modern world is we realize that all of those things are sort of laid one on top of the other. The separation that we achieved in the 17th and 18th and 19th centuries doesn't seem to work anymore. We're living once in all of these frameworks at the same time.
