In the early 1970s many artists around the world were using their body as material it was a newly demonstrative and disturbing practice but one that had deep historical roots in the 20th century. dynamics of pain and its management which are introduced to her from this early age no doubt echo through all of her later work. knowing about this tendency in contemporary art of the time does put marina's early work into perspective for us.
