The idea of the chip on the shoulder pops up every now and again. It's a very class-based insult or retort, but it's actually kind of similar to a much more common retort that women get all the time for basically anything - which is 'you're just too emotional' What infuriates me about the chip on shoulder thing is that it's usually deployed against people who've got completely legitimate complaints,. Usually about hierarchy and usually about class. And the rejoinder that if you complain about being told you've got a chip on your shoulder, this apparently confirms that you have a chip onYourShoulder.
