The Origins of Kinetic Theory

Maxwell was getting his ideas not from physics, about statistics, but from social science. Social scientists had shown that individuals of a variable as a mass have very stable characteristics. So things like marriage rates, crime rates, suicide rates tend to be fairly stable year on year. And those are the ideas that Maxwell was picking up on when he came to develop Clausia's work on kinetic theory.
