In 1791 a slave revolt had broken out in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, present-day Haiti. Napoleon regained it by force, dragging L'Overture back to France where he would die in jail. The diminishing returns in the Caribbean have caused a rethink of French policy in the Americas.
