The Role of Religion in Nigerian Elections
In the Nigerian context, political elite have developed over the course of the past 30 years or so of elections, a kind of informal arrangement. So there was demand building up as well for this arrangement known as zoning to be respected. The APC definitely leaned into that in various respects and portrayed Buhari as the sort of just alternative within the system of zoning. In some respects, the zoning question has played a much more evident role than the economic one.
