The Origins of the Luddite Movement

The word Luddite comes from a weaver named Ned Ludd, who legend goes smashed to knitting frames in what was described as a fit of passion. In reality, the Luddites were an underground network of early 19th century machinists and textile workers who took up arms against industrialists looking to automate them out of a job. They did this quite literally by smashing the factory equipment that threatened to put downward pressure on their wages.
