Doping at the Tour de France up until the late 1960s wasn't illegal. It was just slightly frowned upon, you know, there was no regulation against it. The drugs that they would take all the way from the birth of the Tour were pretty much non performance enhancing in the sense that they were simply there to mask the agony. Back then the doping was all about, how do I get through these 412 kilometers that I get through the night? And so we have chloroform cocaine and alcohol being used all the time.
