The Importance of Advocacy in the Classroom
The kite runner is not an Arab. He may be a Muslim or he may identify as a Muslim, but the Islam that's represented in that text is extremist Islam. So if we're putting this text into the curriculum because we feel like it's speaking to the students, whether Arab or Muslim, it's not speaking to them. It's immersing them in stereotypes of themselves. And then there's nothing else that's in the curriculum oftentimes that actually is representative of these students.
