Directing a Comedy Actor's Dialogue

There are so many levels to the dialogue. One thing to remember is that actors don't act the text. They act the sub text,. What's between the lines, what's between the words. If you give them that room and trust that they are artists, then you don't beat the audience over the head with the comment. You allow the actors to fill it in.
