The History of Assyria

Samaria and its Hinterland suffered a significant decline after the Assyrian conquest of 722. Judah and other polities further south that became Assyrian client states, but were not annexed, appeared to have fared much better. To what extent this redevelopment program really led to an economic revival of the region remains unclear. But studying the Bible in its ancient Near Eastern setting remains instructive.
