History writing was an image making or breaking enterprise. Bruni's interest in that sort of virtue helps to explain a feature of his history. He placed great stress on individual human agency, and saw this as the driving force behind events. This also explains why he was horrified by an earlier event in Florentine history when guilds took over city.
