How to Calm Your Nervous System

Co-regulation is how we build vital neural pathways that help children go from big feelings back to calm. We can do that by breathing or just holding ourselves, giving our a rub and then we might have to go somewhere and slash cold water on our face. Or if we're in front of them and we still have the capacity, we just take some strong steady breaths, calm our nervous system and bring theirs home. The brain doesn't want calm right now. It wants us activated for fight or flight so that can sometimes register as big a threat. So we just have to breathe and be with, validate if they're open to it.
