The Soundscape of a Healthy Reef

The underwater soundscape tells us a bit more than just what's there, doesn't it? It can tell us about the health of that environment. The coral larvae are covered in tiny little hairs all over the outside of their bodies. And so when you play the sound of a healthy reef to a little coral larvae, swimming around a beaker in a laboratory, then it will settle on the bottom of the beaker in response to that sound. We think the coral is using the hairs on the outside of the animal to sense the sound and realize it's near a healthy reef.
