Manonofsky was a kind of galactic ego, that's the sense you get from the lessons he taught. He really wanted to be involved in field work and whenever anyone was doing something that didn't involve him, he felt like he needed to be a part of that experience as well. Field work taught these anthropologists and different generations there's a kind of rough and ready empiricism about it which also connects them all. They were very skeptical of what had been written by missionaries or whether it was travelers tales, they often ransacked that literature for their own end. You couldn't just sit at your desk and read all these books and find out about different parts of the world,
