In this case, we should praise the agent for being prepared to accept torture in order to maximize the chance of saving his friend's life. But something that worries me about consequentialism is that we all live in the kind of fog of life. The fog of life means that we don't really know what the consequences of our actions are going to be. Clearly, our prience of life is that we are more likely to achieve what we set out to achieve if we use reason and evidence to work out what will have the best consequences than if we just roll a dice.
