Some really bizarre stuff happened with L and R in Spanish. If you lose an element of your voiceless series, it's usually P. So pa and ga are the most likely to go away. Classical Arabic has a raft of strange consonants that killed both of them. And using some of these sound changes can sort of smooth over some of that boring looking regularity. Or rather sort of rough it up.
