I wouldn't say that it's necessarily pain zone experiences with money or the lack thereof that was the motivator. But I do secretly wonder if some of his own personal struggles, you know, where to the point where he had to write to friends to see if they would help him out might have had some influence on this. He does imply that in several ways, if not directly through his actions, as you say. His radical streak and his irreverent streak are the two most defining characteristics of pain.
