The Brain of a Baby
By 32 weeks, the basic structure of a human brain is well formed. But what's it actually formed of? The average adult brain weighs about 3 pounds or 1.3 kilos. About 20% of your daily energy requirements are consumed by your brain. Like wires on a circuit board, stimulating one cell can start an avalanche of activity across different areas of the brain. And just like we insulate wires with plastic coverings, our neurons are insulated too, with a fatty substance called myelin.
