Influenza Viruses in Europe - What's Happening?

Professor Nicola Lewis is Director of the World Wide Influenza Centre at the Francis Crick Institute in London. Previously, we've seen waves of the highly pathogenic H5 avian influencer or bird flu viruses periodically cross over to Europe usually mediated by wild bird migration. Now they're not only widespread throughout Eurasia, but they've also crossed the Atlantic and started to infect wild birds and poultry populations in North America. The burden of disease at the moment in both wild birds and also the spillover risk in poultry populations is huge.
