The Emancipation Proclamation and the Struggle for Freedom
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order saying that enslaved people are and would henceforth be free. The Emancipation Proclamation was not so much about abolishing enslavement as it was about garnering support for the Union cause. It did gain Lincoln political support in the North and with some European powers. In 1865, more than two years after the EmanCipation Proclamation, Lincoln was assassinated.
