For shajahan, architecture was his greatest form of self expression. And we can actually consider him to be one of the architects of all his construptions. The whole conception of the tajmahal complex is that you are creating paradise on earth for mumtasmahal. So it's quite interesting, because gardens were a really important part of the architectural production of the mogols.
