Plate Tectonics - Is There a Convective Engine in the Mantle?

Plate tectonics is an idea that has really become a convention, you know, in our lifetimes. It goes back to writings of a german meteorologist named alfred wagner. The question becomes, was there always plat tectonics? There's no evidence for plate tetonics on jupiter or mars. And it would be hard to see how life could sustain and prosper over long intervals of time unless you had this mechanism of surface rejuvenation through theye which is amazing. I can imagine that platetonics, when it originated, could have been local and short lived,. but most people argue that something at least broadly like plate tetonic as we see it
