The analogy I've heard from Sir John Green is essentially it's like inventing a pen cap for a pen. Patents aren't like copyrights after Mickey Mouse or Walt Disney. Once that patent is filed, no one else is allowed to legally sort of create your thing or use your process. That gives you time to do the thing and make your money from it basically, right? And then the patent runs out and then and it's like it's free. Like anyone, like the thing with patents as well is that to get a patent, you need to make that process public.
