The Higgs Boson
The LHC was designed for a couple of different things but one of its primary purposes was to prove the existence of something called the Higgs boson. We're going to borrow some quotes from an excellent article called What Exactly Is the Higgs Boson available at HowStuffWorks.com. The idea is that the entire universe, everything you know and everything you or your friends will ever encounter are ultimately made up of 12 different sorts of particles of matter and four forces. In the 12 particles you will encounter six things called quarks and six things called leptons.
