Greeks had been leaving mainland greece permanently to go settle on the other side of the aegean, in what's now turkey. And one group of them settled what they thought was ancient troy. So from the eighth century b c there should never have been any doubt as to where troy was. But you're going to ask me, ok, why was there ever any doubt in modern times?
