Selective Mutism and the Neurodivergence of Anxiety

Chantal: Selective mutism is a severe anxiety disorder which affects the person's ability to communicate, predominantly affecting their ability to speak. It may appear to be physical in the sense that the person's voice stops working similar to a case of laryngitis, for example. But if you were to see a doctor or have scans taken, no signs of illness would be found. A child might be completely mute at school yet able to laugh and sing at home with a friend later that same day. To try to make a comparison, it is akin to a phobia. The person with selective mutism is effectively falling into freeze mode internally and will sometimes run if given the chance
