Hypercalcemia in the Outpatient Setting
Calcitonin, I like to think of as something like tones down calcium. In the bone, calcitonin inhibits osteoclasts bone resorption. And in the kidney, the calcitonin also inhibits resorption of calcium and phosphate. Calcitonin kind of does the opposite effect of parathyroid hormone. The receptor for both hormones is on the osteoclast.
