In 1992, a reporter asked the Clintons if they had an arrangement that allowed Bill to sleep around. Hillary Clinton responded: "I'm not sitting here as some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Whynet" The appearance was a win for the Clintons in the short term; it defused the bomb before it could blow up Bill's candidacy. In other ways, their partnership was perceived as dangerously radical because Hillary wasn't like any first lady in history.
