The abasids were able to maintain african lands as far as the environs of the city of carthage in the modern country of tunisia for almost another 100 years. The rustamids soon raised their autonomy within the caliphate around the modern algerian city of tar, newly established at the time. Persian or iranian moslems called the saparids would establish an emirat east of the tigris during the second half of the ninth century. At a similar time, the bagaratids would re establish armenian independence in the north. So the size of the abasid caliphate was shrinking down towards its own iraki heartlands. One
