The Good and the Bad of Armchair Detectives
True crime forums can be echo chambers that feed our fear or buttress pre-existing beliefs, according to criminology professor Don Cecil. Professional investigators are bound by the law and prosecutors must prove their case in court. Armchair detectives have no such obligation and are often reckless in their rush to judgment. Maybe they'll flood police with tips formulated from incomplete information or get tunnel vision on a single hypothesis. That's not to say people can't watch this genre, but when there's so much of it and when some of it is presented in such an insensitive manner, then it doesn't seem like it's that far of a stretch to say that the audience could begin to treat these topics in
