Playing Chess With a Blindfold

John McCarthy has been a chess enthusiast his whole life. He wants to see if computers could do something that looked like thinking. In the 1950s, computer scientist Alan Turing had suggested chess playing as a sort of test for artificial intelligence. It would be several decades before scientists realized they were part of an historic event.
