David Frum: How much of an obstacle was homophobia in mobilizing public interest and resources to do what needed to be done? He says the insidious and below the radar screen and sometimes overt homophobia, I think sort of blunted the general public interest in doing something about this. Frum: The thing I often get asked is the pushback on the part of the activists on both sides. Back then, which they being that mostly gay activists was trying to gain the attention of the leadership at the federal level.
