The Role of the Freed Slave
The role of the freed slave seems to be all pervading throughout herculaneum, and perhaps the entire roman world. And there seems to be a very, very strong social role for freed slaves in particular. They seem to form an improbably large portion of the population. It's almost as if people have given up having children and have slaves instead. The ex-slaves could never hold magistracieso but sure they could make money.
