EPISODE 77: Bruce Lee (Part 1)

History on Fire

CHAPTER

The History of the Chinese Exclusion Act

In 1881 for the first time they discussed in Congress banning altogether every single person coming from a certain place because of the retinicity. Doesn't matter men, women, young, old, rich, poor as long as they are Chinese they're out. This virulent racism got progressively worse until politicians smelled the blood and decided to champion a piece of legislation that was remarkably appalling even when compared to the ultra discriminatory legislations that were regularly approved in the 1800s. Incidentally these historical context is represented extremely well in the excellent TV series Warrior produced by Shannon Bruce Lee's daughter.
