The Paradox of the GDR
The GDR was not a regime that knew how to deal with unexpected terms of ill fortune. There was no renewal at the top, especially as there were all men running the state in the 80s. And then you have a system sitting at the top dealing now with highly educated, really confident and highly vocal society. So women play a role in politics to some extent, but they never fully make it into the ranks.
