There's been no greater force for social democracy and socialism in the united states than black struggle. A dematerialized politics of recognition does nothing for poor and working class black people, which are the vast majority of black people. If justice is reduced to initiatives, why do you care about whether or not there's more diversity in the ranks of the academy? Like it just, there's a discontent there that doesn't speak at all to the material needs of the large majority of people.
