The five quote unquote civilized tribes of the southeast engaged in chattel slavery that as part of their so-called civilization process they became slave owners of african people. enslaved people were enslaved by the tribes until a year after the civil war in 1866 when the federal government forced those tribes to finally end slavery. i think that will be pretty shocking to a lot of americans who have no idea of this history and i have read that one of the reasons the black population in toso was so wealthy was the only people who were ever forced to pay enslaved people reparations are some of the slave holding tribes in oplohoma.
