Is 9.0 Acetylated Sialic Acid the Receptor for Influenza C?
9.0 acetylated sialic acid is the receptor for influenza C viruses. If pregnancy induces the enzyme that deacetylates 9.0 then a pregnant woman less likely to get influenza C. And it's really an interesting way to demonstrate how glycosylation can impact a non-FC glycan that's enabling the protection against this pathogen.
