Foster: Dante's teaching on pagan virtue and pagan salvation is at odds with Aquinas' thought. He says that in placing adult pagans in limbo, Dante actually believed an individual pagan could be morally impeccable without sin. But this does not mean that the historical Virgil and other inhabitants of limbo literally did not sin in their earthly lives, he adds.
