The two armies rose from their camps and marched to the plains. The romans were arrayed in the three line formation known as the triplex achies. In contrast, the carthaginian army was positioned across a single row. After an anxious period of inaction, the tension was broken by a clash of the cavalry of the roman right and theCarthaginian left. While slingers and javelin men threw their initial volleys at one another, upon meeting face-to-face, the celt iberian cavalry dismounted and attacked the enemy. They were soon overwhelmed and nearly cut down to a man. And the few survivors were chased off the battlefield
