A woman named Hildegard of Bingen wrote to Bernard of Clavaux in the year 1146. She told him she had been having visions since childhood and was now asking what to do about it. Five years earlier, a particularly vivid vision had unlocked for her the inner meaning of scripture. Her fame spread across Europe like Joan of Arc but with a pen instead of a sword.
