The Translucency of the Eyes

Sometimes people go fishing for deep sea fish and pull them up and it looks like they've got some giant tongue sticking out of their mouth that's actually like their guts being inverted by the change in pressure. inside that fluid behind that shield are its eyes and so this is wondrous when you start thinking about well what does it mean when you have translucency or transparency as an option for for flesh on a being you know imagined or otherwise. It would mean why do you need your eyes to be on the outside of your body at all why not have more material there between your delicate eyes and the harmful scabby outside world?
