Gifts to loved ones are exempt from gift tax. You can give up to $17,000 per year to any one recipient without needing to worry about gift tax. If you're married, you and your spouse can each give that amount. There's a total of $68,000 of giving in a given year before needing to tap into your lifetime exclusion.
