The Origins of Pirate Settlements in Madagascar
There were pirate settlements on the northeast coast of Madagascar in the 1600s. It was a good spot from which to launch raids on Indian Ocean shipping routes. There are some quite large towns where pirate ships could be re-equipped and refitted. And they would also place is to fence the plunder, which was otherwise difficult to move on.
