In 18 53, steamships from the United States sailed into what is today tokio harbor. These were the first foreign ships to enter those waters in some 250 years. commodore matthew perry was a man on a mission. The edo period began way back in 16 o three when a man named tokogawa asu crushed his rivals,. established a ruling dynasty that would last for two and a half centuries.
