The Origins of Gorboduck
In 1561, English playwrights started to present Roman-style comedies with English characters in an English setting. A decade later, we have the first English tragedy on the Roman model: Gorboduck. The story comes from the same tradition that gave us the original King Arthur legend. In late 1580s, England looked at the arrival of the Spanish Armada along the coast of Spain.
