The enigmatic nature of the Egyptian civilization and its hieroglyphs is one inspiration to Napoleon as he launches his campaign at the end of the 18th century. He models himself on Alexander the Great, whose conquest led directly to the Ptolemaic dynasty. But ultimately, Napoleon's military mission is doomed. As the Rosetta Stone is being unearthed, Napoleon's position is weakening. His army suffers severe losses in battles elsewhere in Egypt, and many soldiers succumb to the plague and harsh desert conditions. Just a month later, Napoleon flees Egypt in secret.
