The language of deterrence and coercion has been far from a common vocabulary. Deterrence combined with containment was the strategy pursued by the west towards the soviet union. Coercion is directed at some one, trying to make him stop his undertaking. In the western reaction to russia, we see a certain degree of coercion in the use of sanctions. There is no willingness to engage in direct confrontation in ukraine using military deployment as a kind of chicken game where one party has to yield.
